I would not even remotely consider having one milled to provide clearance for a loading gate. Instead, I'd use one of the drop in cylinders. Web12 nov. 2024 · I have a conversion cylinder for my Remington 1858 peittas that is a bit more plug n play. Put her on half cock, pull down loading lever, pull cylinder pin, place or remove, slide it all back together. Or I would have one for my 1860 as well. Not really worth it. But I love those old time bp revolvers.

IMHO, the 1858s are one of the easiest revolvers to remove and replace cylinders in. With a Howell, you remove the cylinder, load, and replace - no loading gate - but also no alterations to your cap and ball revolver.
Web14 sep. 2024 · I think your problem is the bolt not resetting. The lock notches in the conversion cyls are not as deep as the cap cyls. Since that leaves the bolt arm at a lower angle, it can't reset on top of the hammer cam and thus, the cylinder stays locked. Dragoon is right, the problem is the bolt/cylinder stop, not the hand. WebI have two 1858s, one Pietta with a Howells 45 Colt cylinder and a Uberti with a Taylor's 45 Colt. The Taylor's required no fitting, while the Howells needed a very minimal Dremel grinding on the frame above the trigger for clearance of the forward edge of the cylinder. I'm talking 20 seconds for what was less than 1/64".

I have a 454 Casull, so I do not want to load hot. I just do not want to blow my hand off! Conversion cylinders are rated for COWBOY ONLY, which (very ambiguously) is rated at 14,000 PSI. Howells makes Taylors, except Taylors uses Italian firing pins -- The Howells pins are hardened, and are better IMHO. I have several at Howells now getting new Ferules and firing pins.
