WebFeb 28, 2024 · Rattling is certainly not normal. Sorry to say it’s hydraulic tensioner. The spring provides the needed minimal tension during engine starting, but the pressurized oil provides the required force to the chain. OP, there’s no check valve needed for this relatively small oil volume. WebApr 25, 2024 · Take all the timing gear off, then rotate each cam until you find two cams touching lifters, etc. then follow the procedure to remove cams. All this TDC guff really matters when you putting cams back in and re-timing the engine. As noted, use crank to find TDC. I confirm it with a long screwdriver in cyl 1.

The cover is jammed between the head and the oil pan. If the engine is in the car, it is possible to remove the cover without removing the head. One: If you have a manual transmission, put it in first gear and have a friend stand on the brake. Or apply the parking brake really hard.
